For almost a generation, Café Patron ruled nightlife. Simply hearing the name evoked a sense of intrigue—the French “café,” the Spanish “patron.” But it was the rich aftertaste and easy sweetness that made it iconic.
As tastes evolved, over a decade later Carajillo’s and Espresso Martini’s became the signature of late-night culture. As a result, we obsessed over how to craft a coffee-flavoured ultra-premium mezcal that captures something similar but with one main difference—without artificial preservatives, and without sacrificing the wild, smoky heart of Mezcal.
We locally source natural, organic coffee beans from the mountains of Oaxaca and infuse them after the second distillation. This unique process respects the boldness of the coffee while letting the nuanced essence of Bandida shine through. Even mezcal newcomers can enjoy Bandida Black.
Why coffee? We wanted to create one of the first truly Premium coffee spirit blends. If you are new to Mezcal, and maybe the flavour profiles are too strong for your palate, Bandida Black takes you on a Mezcal journey preserving the delicate notes of Bandida's extra-aged agave; each agave is grown for 9-10 years.
The recipe is the result of two years of tasting and refining, with our top master chef from Monterey and two legendary Maestro Mescaleros from Matatlan. We set out to perfect the balance of every ingredient.
Bandida Black contains no artificial additives or preservatives. The flavour is built from roasted Oaxacan coffee, clove, star anise, orange peel, and cinnamon. Our only sweetener is pure, unrefined piloncillo—Mexico’s traditional cane sugar—used at less than 1/4 to 1/8 the amount found in most coffee liqueurs. The result? A spirit that’s rich, vibrant, and far lower in sugar and glycemic impact than other café-blends- for comparison, Café Patron contains around 37% sugar.
What does it taste like? Expect subtle notes of cinnamon, chocolate, and vanilla, with a velvet finish that pairs beautifully with desserts or adventurous food.
